Quietness

The heat of a summer day in August sometime in the 1530’s forced the defenders to wishfully look towards the water well in the centre of the settlement. The painful quietness was winding down the deserted streets, one could not even hear the birds singing. The persistent rumours of the invasions of the wild Turk cavalry that spread during the past few days did not allow them to leave their positions even for the shortest of moments. The mighty tower, which was three times higher then any house in the vicinity has until then offered the inhabitants of this settlement ample protection. They knew that they must hold out at least a couple more days, but they were not afraid. The coastal Duke sent Radovan, his most sly commander, to their aid.

Unused to the extraordinary heat Radoven silently gazed into the distance. The red-hot air poured over the stone walls and into the lifeless horizon. He became hungry and he sent his servant to ask the locals for some food. The servant did not have to wait for long, for as soon as they heard Radovan’s name, the grateful inhabitants quickly filled his trays with excellent food. The servant knocked on Radovan’s door with heavy trays in his hands.

Thus, he tasted the Lokev prosciutto.
